“Sex is a basic need, but sexual behaviour is a learned ability.”
Dharma (moral values), Artha (prosperity), Moksha (spiritual values), and Kama (pleasure/sex) are among the four Purusharthas (objectives of life) mentioned in Ayurveda. Fulfilment of these objectives is a basic need for every human being. There are various stages of sexual response, and the most essential of them is the achievement of a normal erection with sufficient rigidity for penetrative intercourse. The absence of this can lead to failure and dissatisfaction during intercourse. This condition has been described as ‘Klaibya’ (infertility) in the Ayurvedic models and as ‘Erectile Dysfunction’ (ED) in modern writings.
Types and Symptoms
1. Erectile Dysfunction (Primary and Secondary Impotence)
Primary impotence is an issue when a man is not able to maintain an erection at all, for the purpose of intercourse. In secondary impotence, a man cannot maintain or even get an erection, however, has succeeded in intercourse at least once in his lifetime.
2. Rapid Ejaculation
Rapid ejaculation is the most popular type of dysfunction. It is an inability to delay ejaculation long enough for the woman to orgasm 50% of the time. Also, it can be an inability to delay ejaculation for 30 seconds to a minute after the penis enters the vagina.
3. Retarded Ejaculation (Ejaculatory Incompetence)
Men with this difficulty can maintain an erection for 30 minutes to an hour, but because of their psychological anxieties about ejaculating inside a woman, they are not able to achieve orgasm.
Erectile Dysfunction and Ayurveda
According to Ayurveda, ‘A wholesome life has three main pillars – balanced diet, proper sleep, and a healthy sexual and marital relationship.’
And for a healthy sexual relationship, the most critical aspect responsible as per Ayurveda is the Apana Vayu (type of air). This is one of the five types of Vayu of a human body and is located in the testicles, urinary bladder, phallus (erected penis), umbilicus (navel), thighs, and groin region. Its functionalities include ejaculation of semen and excretion of urine and stools.
So, any disturbance in this Apan Vayu by any means or cause can result in numerous diseases, erectile dysfunction being one of those ailments. The causes associated with vitiation of Apan Vayu is majorly related to irregular or faulty daily routine, for example, improper diet leads to weakening of muscles of the groin area and affects the Vayu.
Ayurveda also identifies seven vital tissues, called Dhatus, that are known for providing nourishment, growth, and structure to the entire body. These Dhatus function properly inside the human body only when they are in proper equilibrium; any kind of disturbance or imbalance in their equilibrium causes diseases.
These seven Dhatus or tissues are Plasma (Rasa), Blood (Rakta), Muscle (Mamsa), Fat (Meda), Bone (Asthi), Bone marrow, and Nerve (Majja), and Semen (Shukra). Shukra is an element that helps in the human reproductive system and is present all across the body. But astonishingly, Shukra expels out from the body only during the means of ejaculation that needs a soulful togetherness of mind and body. The decrease in Shukra dhatu’s production causes erectile dysfunction.
